Minor Spoilers:
Holy...Fucking...Shit...
After taking a recommendation from a fellow video classmate,I watched this last night and...well,wow...This movie is too damn cool for school (pun INTENDED).
The story centers around a high school kid named Brendan (played by 3rd Rock From The Sun star Joseph Gordon-Levitt...trust me,more on him in a second),who infiltrates the teenage underworld crime syndacate in order to find out who killed his ex girlfriend...all with a modern day film noir twist on things.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance grabbed me by the balls and thensome. The guy was just so damn smooth and cool...totally in control damn near all the time, even when he really wasn't. Who freakin knew that the kid from 3rd Rock had some Humphrey Bogart in him? I mean seriously, who FREAKIN knew? Note to self...when you go into class on Tuesday, ask a certain classmate to barrow Mysterious Skin...cause after seeing him chew up every scene he was in during this film,I wanna see more of him.
The writting is fucking fantastic...I'm talkin all sorts of great quotable dialogue out the wazoo ("Theres a thesaurus in the library,'yea's' under 'Y'. Go ahead,I'll wait." LOL oh shit, fuckin OWNED),not to mention all the great twists and turns in the plot itself. The directing is pretty spot fuckin on too (LOVED those focus tricks with the clocks).
Any flaws with this bad boy? Yea,a couple...I find them minor, but strong enough for me not to give out a perfect score. First of all, what the fuck was up with all the parents in this? There were hardly any of them around, and the ones that were didn't seem to give a fuck what their kids were doing...and they were LITTERALLY getting away with murder. Finally,I'm still not sure what Kara's role was in everything in the movie. I'll have to watch it again (trust me,I most certainly will),but it seemed like she didn't have much use.
Minor peeves aside, this was one hell of a great movie...an original modern day TEENAGE film noir with fucking class acting, writting, and directing all around...I would even recommend it as a blind buy...yea,it's that good. Rian Johnson...welcome to the fold. I look forward to your next project.
4.5/5
Fun Film Fact:4 of the stars in the film were all born in 1981...same year I came into the world.
