Dear Capcom,
What the fuck has happened to you? You used to be beautiful. You made some of the best games of the golden age of gaming (NES-PS2),a lot of which are some of my favorite games of all time...you used to be ahead of the pack of just about every other developer/publisher,innovating in the side scrolling genre and practically CREATING 2 of the best gaming genres (fighting games and survival horror games)...and to see the putrid money grubbing whores/talentless hacks you've become is just sickening. Some of the shit you've done as of late has been inexcusable.
#1: Turning Resident Evil from an atmospheric moody survival horror series, one of the originators of the genre no less, into a generic action series. Granted,I did like RE4 for its game play and action set pieces, but there's no denying it was a huge leap backwards in terms of storytelling and horror atmosphere. You had the chance to set things right again with RE5,but what do you do? You take the ridiculous nature of RE4 to its (il)logical retarded conclusion and as a result,RE5 was a horrific abortion…and now we’re looking at Resident Evil 6 on the horizon, and if the trailer is any indication,it looks to be the worst of them all. At least with the last 2 games they knew what they were trying to be (generic action games with small horror traits). THIS fucking game however is trying to be BOTH a generic action game AS WELL AS trying to recapture the atmospheric horror game it used to be WHILE ADDITIONALLY throwing in military ops elements as well…all this to,as you have admitted,to try to appeal to the Call of Duty fanbase. This once amazing game franchise now has more fucking identity issues than Prince.
Truth be told however, the metamorphosis started long before RE4 with the absolute GOD AWFUL Resident Evil movie and the sequels that followed. As much as I DESPISE Paul W.S. Anderson who directed (RE and RE Afterlife),produced (all of them),and most importantly WROTE (all of them) the films in the series (as well as burning him in effigy on a nightly basis for how he horrifically botched Alien vs. Predator),I can only place so much of the blame on him. The fact is that it was YOU Capcom that fired George Romero as the writer/director of the first RE movie, the very man who directly inspired Resident Evil in the first fucking place,in favor of Anderson and his poorly developed ideas of what a RE movie should be...piss poor, generic, and at times even Matrix style action (seeing the nonsensical horseshit slow mo pseudo bullet time sequences in these movies still makes me throw up in my mouth) in place of actual horror and tension...and it was YOU Capcom who had a direct hand in producing these god awful cinematic abominations. So then you had to take these horrific ideas from the films and transport it into the game series itself, and voila...Resident Evil has been made into a complete joke and is a mere shadow of its former self...congratulations on missing the point entirely Capcom.
#2: Street Fighter IV...good lord,I'm still in shock from how TERRIBLE this game is (yet,it's popular thanks to SF/Capcom fanboys that have no clue about what good game design is). Once again, like with RE,you took a beloved and innovative series (SF II is undeniably the birth mother of the modern fighting game genre) and turned it into something it was NEVER meant to be. The developers of Street Fighter II and the sub series of games that followed (notably the Street Fighter Alpha sub series) initially designed the games to be fast paced and rewarded the players for adapting to the game's speed and executing moves/combos within said fast paced game play. This trend started to decline in the first REAL sequel to the series,Street Fighter III,but that game was STILL tolerable in terms of its SLIGHTLY slowed down game play.
Then came THIS mess of a game 11 years later (2008)...you didn't just SLIGHTLY slow the game play down here...you slowed it down to an unforgivable apocalyptic crawl. An arthritic sloth on ritalin could run circles around the gameplay speed of this travesty of a game,as could my grandmother who has been dead for 16+ years. Not only that, you needlessly and idiotically altered the basic game play elements to make the game completely unbalanced in terms of the characters, somehow giving GRAPPLER characters an edge over any other character in the game (process that for a moment). When Zangief can easily hand Akuma his ass without even trying, that's a BLATANT red flag. As if all that wasn't bad enough, you had the bright idea to add an Ultra Combo system in addition to the games standard Super Combo system. An additional metered move system of that nature sounds great in theory, but of course you had to botch that up to. Here's the problem with the Ultra Combo system,Capcom...the meter for said Ultra Combo fills up when the player is getting their ass kicked,as opposed to the Super Combo meter which fills when the player is kicking ass. Then when the player gets their ass kicked long enough to be able to execute an Ultra Combo, they'll find that it's much more powerful than Super Combos, the move that's allotted to the player who's doing well. So instead of rewarding players that are good at the game, you give the advantage to players who suck dick at it...utterly brilliant design choice there,Capcom...just like all the other dumb ass half cocked design choices in this AIDS sandwich of a game. Just like with RE,you have effectively ruined Street Fighter, one of the most prestigious game franchises of all time. Bang up fucking job, cock goblins.
#3: Your overall business practices as of late have been absolutely disgusting. First of all, putting DRMs in some of your recent PSN purchased games to where you have to be logged into the PSN every time you wanna play these games (notably Final Fight Double Impact and Bionic Commando Rearmed 2). What is the reasoning behind this? A lot of these games don't have any kind of online multiplayer whatsoever,so why do I have to be online in order to even PLAY these games that I paid upwards of $15 for? Part of the reason why I got a PS3 over an XBox 360 (besides the 360s inexcusable failure rate,AKA "The Red Ring of Death") is because at one point,NONE of the games purchased via the console's online network required me to be connected to the internet to play them. What happens if my internet goes down (which it does often enough)? I'm shit out of luck as far as being able to play? All the other games I've purchased from PSN are on my console's hard drive and thus I can play them whenever I damn well want. This bullshit DRM nonsense makes it seem like I don't actually own copies of these games and am instead renting them for an undisclosed and unpredictable amount of time...for $15 no less. What a wise purchase and investment that is. What's worse, with Final Fight Double Impact, you didn't even bother to put the notice of the DRM in the fine print, thus deceiving consumers into purchasing it only for them to realize too late that they've been screwed. Nice dick move Capcom.
Next, your tendency of following this new game designer/publisher trend of basically releasing UNFINISHED games in order to nickel and dime consumers out of additional money to get downloadable content (DLC) in order to get the FULL experience of the game...you did this with one of the few recent games you’ve made that I love despite its flaws,Marvel vs. Capcom 3,with the downloadable characters Jill Valentine (from the Resident Evil series) and Shuma Gorath (Marvel Comics villain most associated with Dr. Strange),in addition to downloadable alternate character costumes (which I really couldn't give a rat's fuck about). You really think we're that fucking stupid,Capcom? Like we didn't already KNOW these characters were in the game to begin with before you took them out in order to sell them as DLC to make an extra buck...this was PROVEN to be true when hackers were able to unlock said characters in the game without having to purchase them on PSN (granted there were no audio files with these unlocked characters and unlocking them caused players to lose 2 other characters already on the roster). $60 is already too fucking much to pay for new retail games, yet you and a bunch of other developers/publishers wanna essentially bump it up EVEN MORE in order to get the FULL game? Kiss my ass. However, believe it or not,I would have rather you gone the DLC route instead of what did next…I'm of course referring to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. 12 new characters and some new levels as a brand new retail game for $40…and you STILL kept Jill Valentine and Shuman Gorath as DLC characters, despite all those that may have already purchased them when they got Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Then we have the recently released Street Fighter X Tekken, where it was discovered mere days before its release that it contained characters ALREADY ON THE DISC that you locked out in order to sell them as DLC. That’s like selling a fucking car and finding out the brakes won’t work unless you pay an additional $100.
Capcom...I'm saying this not only as a fan of your entire body of work that you've been building since I was a kid,but also as a lifelong gamer in general...get your shit together. Some of these other companies such as Activision and EA that have become corrupt I really don't give too much of a shit about, considering they both haven't made or published a lot of games that have impressed me. You,on the other hand, are a different story. When I think of companies that have provided some of the greatest games ever,I think of companies like Konami (your rival since the NES era,who has now officially surpassed you),Square (they're starting to go down the shitter as well),and of course you Capcom. Shit like what you and other companies are doing are part of the reason why I have gone from a hardcore gamer to a casual one. Gaming nowadays just doesn't feel the same as it did back in the day. It's lost some of the magic that made it such a great hobby, and I fear that if shit isn't rectified soon,a big damper could be put on gaming and could even lead to a repeat of the great video game crash of 1983 (some of the things that happened that caused the crash, such as over saturation and casualisation, are happening now). I personally thought you were better than that Capcom, and seeing your turn to the dark side is a bit of a depressing sight considering the good times you've provided me as a kid, teen, and even adult. If you have any decency left in you,I implore you...get your act together, become the company you once were, and reclaim the magic you once had. It's not too late...at least I hope it isn't…however, until that day comes,I’m done with you. Enough is enough. I will no longer support you if this is the kind of blatent contempt and disrespect you’re going to show me and other TRUE gamers (not the stupid fanboys who will defend you and companies like you to the last man despite you and said other companies being clearly in the wrong).
Fuck Dragon's Dogma (had no interest anyway),Fuck Resident Evil 6,Fuck any new additions to the Marvel vs. Capcom series (I have MvC 2,which is the best game in the series anyway),Fuck any new additions to the Street Fighter series (only reason I'll get Tekken X Street Fighter is cause it's developed by Namco, the creators of Tekken),Fuck any new additions to the Mega Man series (you'll just cancel them as soon as they're announced anyway),Fuck all of your PSN/X Box Live games...and most of all,for now:
FUCK YOU CAPCOM!!
Love always,
Kefka (a FORMER fan)
