Some spoilers abound:
Ugh...disappointed by The Coen Brothers AGAIN...it seems that while they're great directors, they're really not the best writters in the world at all.
-An overall really bland storyline...there are moments in the film where it looks as though it might go an interesting direction, only to puss out and go the "by the numbers" way.
-Meurice was a rather useless character...in fact, pretty much all the characters outside Ray,Abby,Marty, and Visser didn't serve any purpose to the storyline.
-There are certain shots in the film, that while cool looking, serve absolutly zero purpose in the film other than to cover up the lack of anything going on in the story (the fast approching "Evil Dead shot" to name one). Reviewer Pauline Kael was right on the money in essentially saying the same thing.
-Is it just me or is $10,000 nowhere near enough for anybody to logically risk going to prison for the rest of their life for murder over? If it was something like $1,000,000,or hell even $100,000...but a measly 10 grand?
-So let me see if I understand this correctly...you intend to kill somebody with their ex wife's gun, thereby implicating said ex wife for the murder...yet you don't wear gloves and end up leaving your fingerprints all over the murder weapon? Any fucking cop or detective with logical sense is gonna disreguard the fact that the gun belongs to somebody specific in favour of fingerprint evidence that says somebody else pulled the trigger. Whats even worse is that the individual in question is WEARING GLOVES later in the film.
-Nice fucking job on the blood cleanup,dipshit...you only managed to spill several drops all over the fucking floor.
-You throw the bloody cloths in the incenerator, and not the body? No of course not, that would be too simple (pun INTENDED) and then you wouldn't be able to pad the clock as much.
-You can't possibly expect me to believe that somebody miraculously comes back to life after being in a dead state all that time after being shot, can you?
-Light colored towels to cover up fresh bloodstains in the backseat...yea,REAL fucking smart dipshit.
-You're gonna track down and kill a motherfucker over a stupid lighter?
-If you KNOW that an individual made their way to the nextdoor apartment, why wouldn't you just GO THERE rather than trying to open the outside window of said apartment from the room that you're in?
-If all the bullets in the gun were fired earlier in the film, how are you able to fire said gun and kill somebody? Who reloaded the gun? And seeing as how the bullets for it were back at a house nobody in the film visited after the gun was intially retrived in the first place,HOW was it reloaded?
-Really abrupt ending with litle sense of closure at all.
Theres really only enough going on for the film not to suck completely...it does have some great dialogue and there are some moments that might surprise you for a brief moment, but outside of that, this film is GROSSLY overrated and quite frankly,mediocre...consider this my least favorite Coen Brothers film (with my favorite STILL being Big Lebowski).
3/5
