Spoilers:
I first saw this the very day it was released in theaters and pretty much hated it. Now,2 years later,I decided to give it another chance (in unrated format I might add)...for all you that are clamoring and waiting for me to admit a mistake in judgement, here you go...I was wrong...the movie isn't bad...but it IS mediocre.
I do admit, the second time around the running zombies didn't bother me as much,if at all. They were enough like the traditional zombies, minus of course the running part, for me to overlook it. The pace is also quite good and theres usually never a dull moment when it comes to the zombie blasting action. The atmosphere is rightfully bleak and there are some truly impressive road/city shots (the overhead one in the beginning with the truck suddenly crashing into the gas station is definatly tits).
However, most of the flaws I saw in the original viewing still stand, plus I picked up on a few new ones:
-Michael trading a crowbar,a weapon that was metal and sharp, for a crochet mallet, something thats wooden and not sharp...what...the...fuck?!
-The bitch risking her life and everybody else's for the goddamn dog that she already saw and knew that the zombies had absolutly no interest in whatsoever.
-You're telling me all those zombies couldn't just break through the glass doors?
-Andre's decent into madness over his zombie wife and baby was laughable.
-I'm not a fan of the film's musical scoring at all.
-NEW FLAW:If the zombies in this movie immediatly run after you right when they see you,why did zombie Vivian (the little girl at the beginning) stand at the door after she crept it open and waited for Anna's husband to come to her?
-NEW FLAW:If you look closely, you'll see there are absolutly no marks anywhere on the arms of Andre's Russian girlfriend during her struggle with the zombie and when she is running away. Then all the sudden when she was in the bathroom with Andre, the bite mark magically appears...I don't think so.
-NEW FLAW:How did Andre know to shoot the zombies in the head when he was in the bathroom with his Russian girlfriend during the report where that tactic was revealed? I don't buy that Michael told him, especially because it was Andre that told Micheal to "shoot em in the head" when he shot a zombie in the chest.
-NEW FLAW:CJ's sudden transition from asshole to team player wasn't believable...not for one second...
-NEW FLAW:The movie was blatently inconsistent with how long it took for individuals to turn into zombies.
Overall,it gets some high marks for the cool brainless action sequences and moments of tension, but when it comes to plot and for the most part character development,it falls pretty flat. UNLIKE Return of the Living Dead, this got moderately better with a second viewing...however,I STILL don't see why it gets as much praise as it does.
Old rating:
2.5/5
New and current rating:
3/5
