Minor spoilers:
I know I've been slacking...eat me...
Ok so,Eyes Without a Face is an old 1959 French artsy horror movie about a surgeon who, with the help of his female assistant, kidnaps young girls in order to surgically remove their faces to transplant it onto his daughter's grotesque heavily disfigured face (from a car accident).
Its a slow moving and methodically paced film that actually doesn't feel like its slowly paced in places. You'll see quite a bit of walking around that appears useless, but will eventually show a point AND actually burns minutes away before you know it. There also isn't all that much dialogue in the movie (slightly more than say Haute Tension or The Hitcher, but lower than normal),and most of the dialogue are just simple one line statements,so reading subtitles shouldn't be that much of a problem.
I see this as a classy horror film...even the few disturbing and squirm inducing parts (all about the surgery sequence in the second act) are done in a very subtle way. Its not about trying to scar you...its more of a message film...and in a time where face transplants are gaining steam, this film is probably more relevent now more than ever.
My main complaints? It does drag in places. A lot of the third act wasn't needed and could have been trimmed. Also, there didn't seem to be all that many payoffs in this movie...I counted about 2 total, but thats entirely subjective. Finally, there are spots where the film's age definatly sticks out.
All in all, good little ditty. If you have an attention span,by all means check it out.
