I'm sure many have never heard of this,so heres the lowdown. Its a French film about 4 convicts sharing a prison cell together. They eventually find what seems to be a spell book hidden in the wall. Having discovered that one of the spells in the book actually worked, they try to decipher its formulas as a means of escaping from their cell.
This is one of those movies where 90% of it takes place in 1 room...to pull that off you need a lot of creativity and interesting characters. Malefique pulls both of them off pretty well. Even the typical retarded character, which I usually grow to dislike (see Cube),didn't bug me (probably because he was the first to die,and in an interesting ironic way). The one character that really made things interesting was Carrerre and the subplot involving his wife and kid was a great support to the main plot at hand.
Unfortunatly,it kinda takes a nosedive in the third act. The ending is not only predictable, but corny as well. Hardly any of what happens in the third act goes with the rest of the movie before it.
Reguardless of that,Malefique is still very worthy of your time. Its smartly written (with exception of tha third act) and the characters are all interesting. Sometimes thats all you really need.
4/5
