As if my message board name isn't already a slap in the face indication, this was my absolute favorite video game series at one point. I even told people in high school that "life was the time period in between waiting for the next Final Fantasy." I've only played 5 through 10:
FF V:My least favorite in the series from what I've played. Eventhough it has the best magic system of the bunch (the job system),I found the story and characters too generic, the game too difficult (I never completed it. I stopped at the last spot in the N World before the final Gilgamesh and X Deth encounter),and the villians lame (X Deth...PA-lEEEEEASE).
FF VI:The best video game I have ever played. I missed it when it was on the SNES under the title Final Fantasy 3 (I caught it via Anthologies, like I did with 5). Amazing characters, awsome storyline, the best and most quoteable villian in video game history (Kefka),great storyline twist(s) (the world being destroyed in the first half of the game!),bitchin magic system, and argubly the best sidequests in any FF game (all about the Gogo sidequest)
FF VII:The first FF game I ever played, and it completely blew me a way...a true masterpiece in every sense (although it doesn't quite come close enough to besting FF 6). Amazing characters, awsome storyline,a badass villian (Sephiroth),without a doubt the best storyline twist in the series which just happens to be one of the most emotional moments in all of video game history (sudden death of Aeries at the end of disc 1 by the hands of Sephiroth),kickass magic system, and wonderful sideqeusts that do come close to besting the ones in 6 (but not quite).
FF VIII:Eventhough I ultimatly ended up being disappointed with this,it was still a good game with a unique magic system. However, the story's theme (the romance between Squall and Rinoa) tended to overshadow the overall story. It also had bleh sidequests and a lame villian (with an even lamer, meaning pushover, final battle).
FF IX:Dispite the disappointing magic system and sidequests, this was well on its way to becoming my favorite FF since 7...until they pulled that "hello,my name is Necron...you've never seen or heard of me at all till now,but I'm gonna completely come out of left field and be the final boss fight" bullshit. Yes I know they were trying to be old school like they did with FF 4 (which I never played),but that doesn't mean it was nessasary.
FF X:My third favorite in the series dispite it being more linear than the other games. This did the romance between the 2 main characters thing right, which was not have it completely overtake the main storyline, unlike FF 8. I also think they should have somehow made it so Seymour would be the final boss rather than that holy bug Yu Yevon that its impossible to lose to (yes,Yu Yevon is LITTERALLY a god in bug form...what the hell?!). Better sidequests (meaning better than the previous 2),great characters, wonderful soundtrack, and the first FF game to actually have voiceovers. The magic system was good too.
I never got to play FF X-2 because I really haven't had the time or the money to devote to games that I used to. If anybody who has played it is here, you can go ahead and tell me all about it in detail (what happens in the story, who the final boss is,etc). I don't care cause I'll probably never play it anyway.
Never played FF XI because:
A)Don't play online RPGs because they could be dangerous to me. I probably would end up being one of those people that become so devoted to it that they neglect everything else in life to the point of commiting suicide that you hear.
B)Last I heard,FF XI had a monthly fee...no thank you. You expect me to spend $50 on the game itself, then shell out more money a month just to play it?
I hope that by the time FF XII comes out (getting back to the epic linear non online storylines that made the other games great for this one),I can have the time and money to get it and reconnect with a series that I once followed religiously.
