SPOILERS LIE AHEAD:
As you may well know,I have become quite the big fan of the British TV sitcom Spaced, which is definatly a consistent pattern among Shaun fans. However,I think I may have crossed the line into fanatic...hear me out.
In case you didn't know,Spaced recently premiered on BBC America (last night at 11 to be exact). There were some mild things that kinda puzzled me,like why they decided to use the LAST episode of the first season as the premiere episode because I feel that save for a couple episodes,Spaced is a series that one should view in chronological order to get the full effect of the story...however,I easily let that slide.
But heres the thing thats been buggin me...seeing that it was on cable TV,I expected some cuts...in fact, some of the footage that was cut I agree with in order to meet the alloted half hour timeslot with commercials. However, there was one cut in particular that really annoyed me as I STILL don't see why it needed to be cut. For those who have seen Spaced and know what I'm talking about,I'm referring to the small scene where Tim (Simon Pegg) is celebrating on the sidewalk after just hearing that his ex girlfriend Sarah just recently split up with the guy that stole her from Tim,complete with cartwheels, hugging random people on the street, and hilariously awsome music going along with it.
Yes,they cut that entire thing COMPLETELY out. The cut started at Sarah telling Tim that she split up with Duane Benzie (played by Peter Serafinowicz, who was Pete AKA "Prick" in Shaun of the Dead) and ended up all the way to where Tim tells Daisy (played by Spaced co-writter Jessica Stevenson, who I really want to see more of in things) that he thinks Sarah wants him back. Most of the cut is the thing I don't have the problem with, but actually cutting the first fucking bit with the cartwheels and shit? Cutting that partially dampened the effectiveness of one of the long running jokes in the series. They didn't cut the second time it was done in the episode, this time by Brian (Mark Heap) after he was accepted on a second date with Daisy's friend Twist (Katy Carmichael),but without that first one where Tim does it,Brian doing it just felt like a normal scene.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this...I can accept some of the cutting and the bleeps over the word fuck (although they didn't cut out shit),but to take out a bit thats that essential and really didn't need cut at all in the first place doesn't sit well with me. Although,I may just be rambling, cause I can just always see them uncut on YouTube or just break down and order the DVD set. I'll definatly continue to watch it on BBC America, but I'll definatly be on the lookout for unnecessary editing,if anything to keep me in my "workzone" and help keep me focused on this Advanced class of mine.
