Spoilers
Time for me to be controversial...
I've finally seen this much revered movie, and I gotta say while the premis was great (and to be fair, this is the first movie with said premis) and there are some truly great moments (killing the black security guard and commenting on black people, killing the old lady via heart attack, the drunken rape scene, etc),I felt rather let down by it.
First of all, there are some moments that really bored the shit out of me with details I don't give a shit about (like Ben's monologue about the apartment complexes and their design process).
Second of all, there were moments that seemed extremely ridiculous...like going into a monologue about the mating season/habits of birds while you're trying to chase down a potential victim...I found myself litterally saying outloud "What the fuck are you doing?! I don't care about any of this crap. Stop screwing around before the guy gets away!"...or the part at Ben's birthday party where the rest of his guests continue to act seemingly normal after he kills one of them right in front of them...or when Ben seemingly goes back to normal after his family and girlfriend are killed and sings a song about pigeons near the end.
Third of all, most of the film is in the POV of the individual holding a camera...that is the standards and practices rule the movie sets up...so then all the sudden when you actually see him in prison,I thought to myself "Who the hell is filming this and how?" You can't set up a certain criteria or pattern in a movie, then just suddenly break it for the hell of it...and that was another thing. If Ben was caught and thrown in prison for his crimes, why weren't any of the film crew members? They were just as much a part of it as he was.
Forth of all,Ben just "escaping from prison"...No...didn't buy it for a second. He's in there and all the sudden you hear a phone message that he has escaped...yea right,he murdered countless people...you'd think security would be tight on his ass. Maybe if it would have SHOWN how he was actually able to pull it off I would have bought it,but they didn't so I didn't.
Finally,a lot of the editing is choppy and bad...however I can overlook this seeing as how its done in an independent documentary style.
Now its time for the controversial decision...while it has a load of flaws of its own and pretty much ripped this movie off,I believe The Last Horror Movie is better...why? More interesting lead character, better kills, and just flat out more entertaining. However, there are great enough moments and ideas in this movie to warrent a viewing...from there you can decide for yourself how you feel about it.
3.5/5
