Well Jackson, you did it. You've made the best film of the year.
Lets get any flaws or nitpicks out of the way first. Eventhough it tried to move at a fast pace (at times it did),it still felt like a 3 hour long movie...a lot of the "on the ship and on the way to Skull Island" time could have been cut down significantly. However I see why it was done that way and was never bored,so lets move on.
One thing that disappointed me was the lack of a Kong/giant snake fight that the original had...but since it already had enough groovy moments in the film,I let it slide.
Here is the REAL flaw I saw,and I predicted Jackson would do this. After they knock Kong out, they automatically transition to a time period later where everybody is back in the city with the captured Kong...nevermind that everyone had to drag Kong's giant knocked out carcuss across the water all the way back to the ship, which I would say was too damn small to even hold him, with absolutly nothing (unless maybe the harpons) AND somehow get the ship out of the area lost in time when they were brought there beyond their control to begin with...I guess Jackson didn't know how to solve that problem so he just automatically placed them back in the city with Kong.
Thankfully everything else is done so well for me to care about that. The CGI is amazing (I even didn't mind the stampede scene everybody is complaining about). Kong was absolutly wonderful and a character I could truly get behind, which hasn't happened in awhile. All actors came through gangbusters (even Jack Black, who I thought would fall flat on his face, ended up coming through).
The action sequences, like most other Jackson films, are flat out brillient. I was litterally yelling out at the screen (AKA my computer monitor) like Beavis when watching Kong battle those 3 T-Rexs. I yelled out stuff like:
YEA HIT EM HIT EM HIT EM!
KICK EM KICK EM!
YEA YEA THROW EM!
YEA SMASH IT WITH THE ROCK,YEA YEA!
(T-Rex bits Kong's arm) OH YOU PISSED HIM OFF NOW!SLAM EM! GIVE EM THE SNAPMARE! THERE YA GO!
You get the idea. Then of course you have the giant bug/worm sequence which,to quote Strong Bad,"gave me the jibbles"
Here we have a popcorn flick with soul, which is quite rare these days. I laughed,I cheered, and I was moved (didn't cry or shed any tears at the end because its only a movie, but I definatly didn't feel too good after that). Unlike the original,Kong is actually a credible and extremely loveable character. Is the movie better than the original? No. Is it on par with it? Most definatly. Consider this one of those rare moments where I actually love a remake.
5/5
