Some spoilers
Well,we can now add this to the pile of movies that looked great in the trailer, but ultimatly turned out to suck...
-I knew the quaint little surburbian environment would NOT serve well for an Alien and Predator film at all,and dispite the hope I got from the trailer that they might have been able to make it work,my assertion turned out to be correct. On top of all this, the movie manages to pull off what I thought was impossible, and have EVEN WORSE human characters than the original did! Seriously, these characters and how they were written (severely underdeveloped with poor characterization) were puke inducing! So since the characters were so poor,my investment in them was nonexistent...and just what the fuck was a love subplot between 2 high school students doing in a movie featuring Aliens and Predators anyway?
-Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the explosion from a Predator's self destruct mechanism one of A-Bomb proportions? I'm pretty sure it was in the original as well as AVP...so then how exactly is the forrest still well in tact after said explosion, how could the Predator have realistically gotten away from it and lived after running just mere yards away when the explosion happens, and how exactly does the explosion not alert anybody back in town?
-If the Predator knew that there were people around looking for the bodies of the missing hunter and his son,why the hell didn't it just STAY IN CAMMO MODE while dealing with their remains?
-Was it just me or did the Predator have to teleport in order to kill the cop that spotted him and ran away? I know the Predator is fast, nimble, and out of this world, but not enough to litterally be waiting on the opposite side of his running victim.
-If the Predator's goal was to remove all traces of evidence from the crash incident and all that would happen because of it,why the fuck would it have left the skinned body of the cop hanging in the trees? Why not just splash some of that blue corrosive substance on the body?
-The battles themselves, while more plentiful than the original, were too dark, too close up,and with too much shaky cam bullshit to be able to tell what was going on...poor cinematography and editing in those battles.
-Some really poor editing where it would focus on a brief Alien and Predator battle at a power plant, only to then cut to Ricky and his love interest sneaking into the high school's pool area to make out...thats just one example, but there are plenty more
-"The government would never lie to us". When was that stupid bitch born?
-How is it exactly that the Predalien is able to implant chestbursters into people? And why just female hosts?
-How the fuck is Ricky able to survive being impaled by the Predalien?
-Although the Predator design was much better this time around,it's roar still didn't sound like the one in Predator and Predator 2.
I'm sure I'm missing plenty of other flaws (like how the film is so far out of place in continuity with both the Alien AND Predator series, which was one of the big problems of the first AVP),but those are the ones that I can distinctly pick out from memory. Granted there were some good things in it to help ease the pain of the watch...such as the Predator REALISTICALLY being able to take on several warrior Aliens at once and WIN,UNLIKE the original...also the gore and mean spirited nature helped too (not only do kids get it,and not only are newborn babies helplessly in harms way,but a pregnant woman gets implanted with chestbursters as she is about to go into labor)...and for how brief and barely visable the final confrontation was,I got slightly geeked when the Predator took its mask off and roared at the Predalien (it was almost like a complete role reversal from the Dutch/Predator encounter in the original Predator)...not to mention that I appreciated getting my first film glance at the Predator homeworld...
Unfortunatly however all the gore, mean spiritedness, good creature designs, and playful nods to the important Alien and Predator films in the world doesn't make up for bad writting, cinematography, directing, and editing. All in all,it's an improvement over the original AVP...but thats not saying much because they could have filmed an hour and a half long massive Alien and Predator orgy and it STILL would have been better.
I'm convinced the only way we're gonna get a good AVP film is to set it in space with space marines in the middle...it's unfortunate that Peter Briggs' AVP screenplay was never adapted,as it was apparently one of the best movies never made...
2.5/5
