Well hell,I just read the syllabus for my next class that starts tomorrow...looks like I've got my work cut out for me and will be pretty busy.
Assignments:
1. Narrative Video (400pts) - Students will write, produce, direct, and edit a 10-15 minute short video. This short will be shot outside class time and off campus. Cameras will be checked out, outside of class time. The video will focus on a specific genre. Each student will submit a script from a story idea/treatment, and storyboards. All students will direct individual scripts, act as cinematographer, and be graded on their clips, and a final edited video. This is a fun and exciting project but also one that will demand a lot out of class time.
2. Documentary/Informative Video (500pts) - Students will write, produce, direct, and edit a 10-15 minute documentary/informative video. This short will be shot outside class time and off campus. Cameras will be checked out, outside of class time. The video will focus on a specific public interest issue with the local community or college, or history relevant to the Columbus area. Each student will submit a script from a story idea/treatment, and storyboards. All students will direct individual scripts, act as cinematographer, and be graded on their clips, and a final edited video. This is a fun and exciting project but also one that will demand a lot out of class time.
I've already got a good idea for the documentary and shouldn't have any problems filming it...the only problem is if this idea will be allowed. I've got an idea for the narrative one,but there are some obsticles I need to make sure I can smoothly overcome before trying it.

Well fuck damn, this class isn't wasting anytime! I already have a treatment for the narrative project due in 2 days!
Like I said,I have an idea...but I don't know how feesable it is...so now not only do I have to come up with a strong backup idea (which I'm currently having trouble with),but I have to write a treatment for the idea I already have and the backup idea I don't...all in 2 days.
I need more MDX...

Its amazing what brainstroming with friends can do...
I've already got a solid back up idea...and it even has a better name than my previous short (Candy Colored Clown...yes I'm THAT obvious in my reference). Now all I need to do is write the treatment for it,which shouldn't take TOO long...

You know,I've been thinking...and I'm sure this has been said to death. The big marketing geniuses behind movie studios are morons. They spend so much time on what kind of target audience would be best for a movie, like theres a set defining social grouping for everyone in the world. Truthfully,if an idea is good enough it would have no problem marketing itself. Drop the target audience bullshit. The only way marketing is even relevent is with release dates, and the movie studios have been fucking that up left and right these days. Land of the Dead was a perfect Halloween movie, and what did they do? Put it up against all the summer blockbusters of the season...and what I knew would happen happened. Everybody is wondering why King Kong isn't doing as well as it should. The answer? Its a summer blockbuster film that was released in the winter. "Oooo its winter time in New York in the film,so lets release it in the winter." Yea,good plan dipshits. Not as many people seeing it wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that it was colder than a well digger's ass outside and snowy weather made driving a dangerous endevour now would it? Then you have the fact that movie tickets are far too expensive these days, but thats a whole different issue for a whole different post. Its a great feeling knowing that these great marketing wonders went to school for years to learn these techniques of monumental fuck ups...

You want something completely random? Here you go...
Here are 10 things I would do as a porn director:
-I would be exculsive to only doing lipstick lesbian porn.
-Make DAMN SURE they DON'T FUCKING LAUGH during ANY parts of the sex act...that fucking gets on my nerves and totally kills the mood.
-NEVER pan the camera down somewhere else when one or both partisapants are executing a foreplay technique...Like when 2 chicks are making out and the camera suddenly pans down to their asses...I hate that shit. If they're doing something,I want to SEE it.
-Try to stay away from subdued lighting. Sometimes it works for effect, but a lot of porn film makers ridiculously overdue it.
-Lots of moist tongue kissing...I want to hear both sets of lips coming together, which leads me to the next one.
-Make damn sure it has good sound. Too many times have I seen online porn that looks damn good, but the audio is completely horrible which ruins it.
-Use lots of closeups. Not only does it bring the viewer closer into the mix,but also helps make the sound quality better.
-I would NEVER talk or "star in the backround" of it...it pisses me off when the director/camera man tries to be involved in it some kind of way like that.
-I would stay away from having music playing in the backround...no this isn't the same as adding porn music when editing. I'm talking about actually shooting a porn scene with a radio on in the backround,to use as an example. Kills the mood AND fucks with the sound quality. As for adding music during editing, sometimes it works...but I usually prefer silence. Makes the scene more personal.
-This may sound lame, but I actually like a HINT of storyline in there for effects...especially if its something kinda taboo. I've always wanted to get the sense that some guy's girlfriend gets seduced by the guy's sister, who completely converts her into a lesbian in that first session. Stuff like that is arousing to me.
There you have it...10 things I would do as a porn director...until next time,I'm Kefka...reminding you to stay the hell out of my liquor cabinet...

You know all those stories about how making movies is full of stress? Well, they're all true. Not a goddamn thing went the way I planned.
-Both my actor and fucking crew arrived 2 fucking hours late,so therefore,I couldn;t get all the footage I wanted,so now I gotta shoot more on Wednesday which will really fuck up my post production time.
-I found out at the last fucking minute that the police officer I had lined up to shoot with couldn't make it and nobody else could be gotten,so now I have to shoot that on Wednesday.
-After everybody had already left,I had discovered I forgot to put a AA battery in the boom mic! I was still getting audio levels though,so maybe it won't affect anything...but if it does, that means I gotta shoot EVERYTHING all over again.
I just fucking knew things wouldn't go as planned...I just had that feeling.

Man,I feel like a huge bolder has been lifted off my chest. It seems the lack of battery in the boom mic didn't make a difference as I not only got audio, but good audio. I REALLY didn't want to have to shoot the whole goddamn thing over again, and now I've confirmed that I don't.
However, the bad news is I DO have to do SOME reshoots, but thats really not that bad seeing as how I've still got some lingering footage left to get anyway.
I've also found some badass score music that I'm gonna try to get clearance to use. The individual who made them said in his FAQ that anybody can use his material for student films and such as long as he got credit for it...but my instructor might be anal and have me turn in a release form for it anyway.
Poster should be done over the weekend...I'm also gonna make flash title screens and convert them to gifs...
And that concludes the update on my film status...

-I had to buy my own fucking AV cord at the last fucking minute for the fucking boom mic cause the fucking lab tech forgot to give me a fucking cord, then when I fucking went in to tell him this later in the day,he fucking told me that he fucking forgot to fucking tell me that that all the fucking cords were in fucking use...FUCK!
-I've already had to do way more than a director usually does...not only am I the writer, director, editor, and executive producer...but I'm also the cinematographer (which I ain't that good at) and even Script Supervisor...stress,stress,and more stress.
-I forgot to fucking do a photograph capture of my actor for my poster,so now I have to come up with something else...
-I have less than a week to digitise the footage and edit...
FUCK ME!

Currently on campus...tired as hell.
This is looking like its going to be my "flawed, but watchable" short. I wasn't as consistent with the lighting in my shots as I wanted to be,a couple of editing spots/cuts are shoddy, the audio levels are inconsistent in places (that might be able to be fixed however),and I've spotted some continuity issues that normally a script supervisor would make sure didn't happen (which I don't have said script supervisor and I was too busy doing all my other duties to notice any of them). Stuff like the kitchen light suddenly being on when it was turned off the entire time (I edited to make it look like he may have turned it on after he left the room in the previous shot) and the phone being in a different place than where my actor first put it down when he comes back into the room.
But you know what? Fuck it. Mistakes like the continuity issues happen in major motion pictures WITH script supervisors anyfuckingway. Se7en has one (although its so big it makes it a plot hole) and even Resevoir Dogs has one (big enough to be a plot hole again),and those are both good movies. For a film that the maker really wasn't that invested in to begin with (too many people telling me how I should make it,rushed due dates),its not that bad. Also considering what I had to work with and all the duties that a director NORMALLY doesn't have to do (I only had a 2 person crew one day and a 1 person crew for reshoots, both other than me),its not that bad.
Thankfully I've got some good news...I ended up having to get direct permission from the person who wrote and recorded the horror score pieces I wanted, and I just saw in my inbox that he replied, granting me permission. I'm also ahead of schedual on my post production and only have 8 more clips to edit in before doing all the sound work...and I have about 3 days to do this (plenty of time, believe it or not).
That concludes my production update...I'm now leaving for home, and immediatly going to bed when I get there...

I'm 90-95% done with my post production. All thats left is some lingering sound and end credits stuff...simple shit. The soundtrack I picked rules all. It gives the film that extra bit of flare and personality...it almost sounds like a Carpenter score. Much thanks to the great and talented Kevin MacLeod...seriously,check out some of his horror filmscore material: www.incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/I honestly can't believe how quickly its taken me to get the post production done. Either I'm a really good and swift editor,or I've done majorly fucked up...only time will tell. Poster is on tonight's agenda. My "premiere" is in 3 days. Something I've been meaning to comment on but have been neglecting for some reason. Both in this and in Candy Colored Clown (my first short),the main character is an overweight man...in Candy Colored Clown,my main character was only a bit overweight (and by that I mean noticeably),while my main character in THIS film is quite a bit overweight...and both individuals die in the films...I dunno,I just thought that was kinda funny...maybe its a gimmick I've subconsiously created...fat repulsive individuals dying... Anywho, another production update is in the can...not that anybody cares...

Poster is done. Heres what I started out with: And heres what I got after all the editing, filtering, and fine tuning: If you notice, the hand is transparent in the final product...thats to hint at the possibility that the main character is imagining the stuff that goes on early in the film (door knockings, phone ringings, door knob jigglings). It also shows how quiet the killer is. I'm gonna hold off on posting the absolute final product because I've have to find a way to shrink it down and not totally fuck up the text effects (its currently 8.5 by 11,which is the required size for the project)
